The first highway bridge in this area was a pair of 1932 era suspension bridges. Those bridges had a series of problems, so they were replaced in the 1970s. Ironically, the new bridge has also had a series of problems. It was closed for two years starting in 1981 due to problems with the large metal beams. Otherwise, this is a very clean and simple structure that does not distract one's eyes from a very scenic section of the great river.
