This is one of two locations where MN Highway 6 crosses the Mississippi River. This is the northernmost of the two river crossings, just upriver from Grand Rapids. The other MN-6 crossing over the mighty river is north of Crosby, which is upstream of Brainerd.

The bridge itself is a very modern prestressed concrete girder bridge. This is a very typical bridge for this section of the Mississippi River. The previous bridge at this location was a 1911 swing span. The movable bridge was important in an era when a steamship served the Mississippi River communities from Cohasset to as far north as the Winnibigoshish Dam area.

These photos were taken just as it was getting dark. Digital cameras are very good at delivering viewable pictures in very low light as long as you can hold the camera steady. Since the sun had already set, there were no shadows to worry about. But with the light only available from the west, that dictated only two possible camera shots. Note that traffic must be pretty light if I can stand in the middle of the highway with a tripod and not be disturbed. It is very swampy in this area, so I could not venture far enough off of the road to get a profile shot of the bridge, and the only side angle had brush in the way. The things you see when you don't have a chain saw handy.
